Image of Choice. 
PSP 9: Should work in other versions

Impressionist plugin: Impressionist

BorderMania: Frame #2

This tutorial assumes you have a basic working knowledge of PSP.

 

Part 1: Preparation

Notes All settings will remain the same unless otherwise noted.

Part 1: Preparation

 

1. Open an image of choice in Paint Shop Pro, Duplicate (Shift+D) and close the original.

 

2. Image > Resize

Settings:

No more than 400-425 pixels on the longest side if you are making a header

No more than 300-325 pixlels in width if making it a sideborder

Let the other side self-adjust

Resample using: Bicubic

Lock aspect ratio: Checked

Resize all layers: Checked

 

3. Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen (if necessary)

 

4. Using your Dropper Tool (E) choose two colors from your image.  Right mouse click for a dark background color, left mouse click for a light foreground color.

 

5. Edit > Copy

Part  3: Pattern Tile

 

1. File > New

Settings:

Width: 300

Height: 300

Raster Background: Checked

Transparent: Checked

 

2. Flood fill with light color.

 

3. Effects > Plugins > Impressionist > Impressionist

 

4. Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

Settings:

Default (click black arrow at the top)

 

5. Using the Dropper Tool (E) select a color from your frame.  Using the top part of the frame tends to work best.

 

6. Layers > New Raster Layer

 

7. Flood fill with your new color

 

8. Lower the opacity on this layer until you have a text friendly background.  Keep in mind the shade of the frame so that your background coordinates.

 

9. Layers > Merge > Merge Down

 

10. Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

 

11. Change Foreground to your Pattern Tile

Settings:

Angle: 0

Scale: 100

 

12. Continue to Part 4 if you are making a side border.  If you are making a header stat skip Part 4 and go to Part 5.

Part  4: Side Border Background

 

 

1. Working with the framed image

*Note* Optional - You may want to resize your finished frame to 300-350 pixels if you use a smaller resolution screen.

 

2. Layers > Promote Background Layer (if needed)

 

3. Image > Canvas Size

Settings:

Width: 1700 (or whichever works best for your monitor settings)

Height: Height of your image

Lock aspect ratio: Unchecked

Middle left placement

 

4. Layers > New Raster Layer

 

5. Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

 

6. Flood fill layer with your pattern tile

 

7. Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

 

8. Activate your frame layer

 

9. Layers > New Raster Layer

 

10. Add your watermark and add the credits for the artists work to your image.

 

11. File Export, JPEG Optimizer.  I usually set to 20%, but you can set to your liking.

Part  5: Header Background

 

1. Maximize your framed header image

 

2. Layers > New Raster Layer

 

3. Add your watermark and add the credits for the artists work to your image

 

4. File Export, JPEG Optimizer.  I usually set to 20%, but you can set to your liking.

 

5. Working on the frame layer

 

6. Selection > Custom Selection

Settings:

Top: 75

Left: 0

Right: 50

Bottom: 275

 

7. Edit > Copy Merged

 

8. Edit > Paste As New Image

 

9. Minimize Frame

 

10. Working on your new image

 

11. Image > Mirror

 

12. Image > Canvas Size

Settings:

Width: 1700 (or whichever works best for your monitor settings)

Height: 200

Middle left placement

 

13. Layers > New Raster Layer

 

14. Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

 

15. Flood fill layer with your pattern tile

 

16. Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

 

17. Working on the top layer

 

18. Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

Settings:

Vertical: 3     

Horizontal: 0

Opacity: 30

Blur: 10.00

Shadow Color: Black

Shadow on new layer: Not Checked

 

19. Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

Settings:

Tiling Method: Edge

Direction: Vertical

Width and Transition: 50%

 

20. File Export, JPEG Optimizer.  I usually set to 20%, but you can set to your liking.
